Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when numerous of them entered the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend passed through the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that such operations become not financially viable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
