TikTok Grants Viewers Power to Reduce Artificial Intelligence-Made Videos in Their Feeds

The platform is rolling out a new feature that permits them to reduce the quantity of AI-made media appearing in their feeds. This move comes as the service announced that it now features more than 1 billion AI-generated clips.

Testing and Rollout

The update is being tested over the following weeks before a widespread release. This advancement comes amid a rise in AI content, fueled by emerging AI video creators.

AI Proliferation Online

Recent reports that almost a tenth of the quickest rising video streams on a competing service only show content made by AI. A large amount of this output is classified as “AI slop”, a phrase for substandard, bulk-generated content that is typically illogical or dreamlike.

“We know from our community that a lot of users like content made with AI tools, from AI artwork to educational videos, and we intend to provide users the power to see more or less of that, depending on their own likes,” stated a company executive.

Scale of AI Content

TikTok shared that there are currently 1.3 billion videos on its network labeled as AI-generated. Overall, in excess of 100 m pieces of content are added to the app each day, making AI-generated material a limited part of its overall inventory.

User Control Features

Users will be capable of limit or boost the amount of AI content they see by accessing the “manage topic” feature in the platform and picking the AI content topic. Additional categories that currently be adjusted under the setting encompass news, fashion, aesthetics, and movement.

Content Labeling and Policies

Its rules oblige users to identify convincing AI-generated content, and it prohibits harmful deepfakes of public figures or emergencies. Any authentic-looking AI-generated clip that is not labeled can be deleted under its user guidelines.

Additionally, the service will from now on attach an artificially created watermark to content created with its proprietary AI systems, or flagged by an industry-wide initiative for recognizing artificial media. This measure is designed to stop users from attempting to circumvent the disclosure requirement.

Educational Initiatives

The company is also establishing a $2m educational fund for experts and groups to create educational content about using AI responsibly. This project will benefit educational bodies specializing in training coding and technology.

Moderation Strategy

The video-sharing app has defended its safety measures, during debate over intentions to cut jobs for a large number of content moderators in Britain. The company is expected to eliminate 439 jobs in its trust and safety department in its British office, with worker representatives and internet security professionals raising concerns that people are being substituted by machine-led review.

A company official stated that human moderation would remain essential, but AI can shield workers by eliminating the most graphic content before it gets reviewed by staff. The company stated a 76% decrease in disturbing and violent content handled by human moderators over the previous year due to intervention by its machine learning processes.

We believe it is crucial to balance staff and AI to maintain a secure environment,” the official commented. “We’ll have people as part of that process, but we additionally believe it’s extremely critical to limit contact with dangerous material as swiftly, which is where a lot of the machine support is making a difference operate efficiently.”
